Singer-songwriter d4vd has canceled the final two shows of his U.S. tour and multiple European stops after the discovery of a teenage girl’s body in a vehicle linked to him. Venues in San Francisco and Los Angeles confirmed the cancellations, and Ticketmaster marked both events as called off. Authorities are investigating the death of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, whose remains were discovered in a Tesla at a Los Angeles tow yard earlier this month. Police have not named d4vd, born David Anthony Burke, 20, as a suspect, though several outlets report the car was registered to him. Celeste had been missing since April 2024, when she was just 13 years old. On September 16, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified her remains, which officials described as dismembered and wrapped in plastic. Days later, LAPD homicide detectives searched Burke’s home as part of the ongoing investigation. His representatives have not commented. The case has already had fallout beyond the tour. Interscope Records has reportedly shelved promotional plans for d4vd’s deluxe album Withered, and fans allege the singer has been deleting online discussions about the case from his official Reddit community. Meanwhile, Celeste’s community in Lake Elsinore held a candlelight vigil, where neighbors and strangers gathered to honor her memory. “I’m feeling heartbroken, devastated for hearing about the news. I didn’t know Celeste personally but it hits home,” resident Gabriela Flores told KABC.

Diane Martel, the innovative and trailblazing music video director behind some of the most iconic visuals in pop and hip-hop, died Thursday, September 18, in New York after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 63. Martel passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital surrounded by friends and family, her relatives told Rolling Stone. She is survived by her aunt, Gail Merrifield Papp, wife of Public Theatre founder Joseph Papp, along with her three cats, Poki, PopPop, and PomPom, and many lifelong friends. Born and raised in New York, Martel first gained recognition in 1992 with her directorial debut for Onyx’s “Throw Ya Gunz.” She went on to shape hip-hop’s visual identity throughout the decade with videos like Method Man’s “Bring the Pain” and Gang Starr’s “Mass Appeal.” She also forged a long-running creative partnership with Mariah Carey, helming “Dreamlover,” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and “Whenever You Call.” By the 2000s, Martel was working with some of the world’s biggest stars, from Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears to Franz Ferdinand, Clipse, and The Killers. In the 2010s, Martel continued to cement her legacy, directing Beyoncé’s “Best Thing I Never Had” and Alicia Keys’ “Brand New Me” before making global headlines in 2013 with two of the most provocative videos of the decade: Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop.” Despite the controversies, Martel embraced her reputation for boldness, once telling Rolling Stone, “I like being provocative. That’s punk, that’s rock & roll, that’s hip-hop.” Remembered by collaborators like Pharrell Williams for her youthful creativity and fearless vision, Martel leaves behind a body of work that helped define the look and feel of modern pop culture.

A proposal to bring a Caesars Palace casino to Times Square, backed by rapper Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, was rejected Wednesday by a state community advisory committee in a 4-2 vote. The $5.4 billion plan, which also involved Caesars Entertainment and developer SL Green Realty, sought to transform the office tower at 1515 Broadway into a hotel, casino, and entertainment hub. But opposition from Broadway theater owners, producers, and residents proved decisive. The “no” votes came from representatives for Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, state Sen. Liz Krueger, Assemblyman Tony Simone, and Councilman Erik Bottcher. Appointees of Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams voted in favor. Following the defeat, SL Green CEO Marc Holliday lashed out at the committee, calling the decision “a despicable display of cowardice” and accusing opponents of turning their backs on potential jobs and economic benefits. The Broadway League, which spearheaded opposition through the No Times Square Casino Coalition, hailed the decision as a victory for a theater district still struggling to recover from the pandemic. Theater owners, labor unions, and neighborhood groups argued a casino would undermine the cultural and economic balance of Times Square. Without local board approval, the project is off the table, narrowing the field as the state Gaming Commission prepares to award up to three New York City-area casino licenses in December.
