Keefe D Told Detectives His Nephew Fired Fatal Shots at Tupac Shakur, Jurors Hear
Jurors heard Thursday that Duane “Keffe D” Davis told Los Angeles detectives in a 2008 interview that his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, fired the shots that killed Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas in 1996. Davis said he was riding in the white Cadillac with Anderson and two other men when they pulled alongside the vehicle carrying Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight.
According to the recorded interview, Davis said he initially passed a gun to another passenger before Anderson took the weapon and began firing. The interview marked the first time Davis directly discussed his alleged involvement in Shakur’s killing with authorities. Prosecutors consider the recording key evidence against Davis, whose other statements in interviews, podcasts and his memoir have also been cited as evidence.
Davis, now 63, has pleaded not guilty and maintains that prosecutors’ case is based on stories he has told rather than corroborated evidence. His attorney has described the prosecution’s account as “fiction” and argued investigators failed to substantiate Davis’ statements. Prosecutors allege the shooting was retaliation for an earlier confrontation involving Anderson and members of Shakur’s entourage at the MGM Grand following a Mike Tyson fight. Anderson died in 1998 without ever being charged in Shakur’s death.
