In 1972, The Staple Singers delivered one of soul music’s most uplifting anthems with “I’ll Take You There.” Written and produced by Stax Records executive Al Bell, the gospel-rooted track soared to No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts, spending 15 weeks on the charts overall. By the end of that year, it had sold over two million copies, cementing its place as one of the best-selling gospel songs of all time. The single, featured on the group’s Be Altitude: Respect Yourself album, showcased Mavis Staples’ commanding vocals in a call-and-response style that invited listeners to imagine a brighter place. Backed by the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, the track blended gospel fervor with Southern soul grooves, making it both deeply spiritual and irresistibly danceable. Its stripped-down two-chord structure only added to its infectious, feel-good energy. Decades later, “I’ll Take You There” continues to resonate. The song has been covered by artists like BeBe & CeCe Winans and General Public, sampled by Salt-N-Pepa, and even featured in Chevrolet commercials. Rolling Stone hailed it as “the epitome of the Muscle Shoals Sound,” and in 1999 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. More than 50 years on, this Staple Singers classic remains a timeless call to joy, hope, and unity.

Montell Jordan, the R&B star best known for his 1995 hit “This Is How We Do It,” revealed on NBC’s Today that his prostate cancer has returned less than a year after undergoing a radical prostatectomy. The 56-year-old singer and pastor shared that doctors initially believed the cancer was confined to his prostate, but follow-up testing showed otherwise. During his nine-month exam, physicians detected a small amount of cancer cells in his prostate bed and lymph nodes. To address this recurrence, Jordan will undergo proton radiation therapy five days a week for nearly two months, along with hormone blockers to limit testosterone production, which fuels most prostate cancer growth. He described the treatment as “a 7½-week interruption of life to make sure that I have a longer life.” Jordan, who began regular prostate screenings at age 40, admitted his diagnosis early in 2024 came as a shock despite his healthy lifestyle. He avoids alcohol and smoking and maintains a balanced routine of diet and exercise. While the news was difficult to process, he emphasized that his quality of life has remained strong since surgery and that he is determined to continue his ministry and music work while fighting the disease.

A California jury sided with Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B on Tuesday, finding she was not liable in a lawsuit brought by former security guard Emani Ellis. Ellis had accused Cardi of assaulting her at a Beverly Hills OB/GYN clinic in 2018, when the rapper was pregnant with her first child. The nine-person jury deliberated for about an hour before clearing Cardi of any wrongdoing. Ellis’s lawsuit, filed in 2020, claimed the artist (whose legal name is Belcalis Almánzar) spat on her, used racial slurs, and lobbied to have her fired from the clinic. Ellis sought compensation for medical costs and at least $250,000 for pain and suffering, alleging that the altercation left her traumatized. Her attorneys argued that Cardi should be held responsible for the alleged assault. Cardi B firmly denied the accusations throughout the trial, insisting Ellis was the aggressor and attempted to film her entering the doctor’s office before her pregnancy was public. Speaking outside the courthouse, she said, “I swear to god, I will say it in my deathbed: I did not touch that woman.” The rapper warned against future “frivolous” lawsuits, vowing that if targeted again, she would countersue.
