Last week legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex revealed that he is leaving Hot 97 after more than three decades with the New York City radio station. The Bronx native, born Aston George Taylor Jr., confirmed his final show will air on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. Flex, who began hosting Hot 97’s first hip-hop show in 1992, became one of radio’s most recognizable personalities, known for his explosive “bomb drop” sound effects. While he has not disclosed his next career move, the DJ teased on Instagram that “My next move will shock you!” Flex used his farewell shift to address speculation that he was involved in the firing of longtime colleague DJ Enuff, who was let go from Hot 97 on Aug. 28 after a 27-year run. Enuff told TMZ he suspected Flex played a role in his dismissal, but Flex denied the claim on-air, insisting, “TMZ could never twist me up to flip on my guy, I love him to death. I would never have anything to do with anyone being fired… I’m too hot.” Flex suggested instead that unnamed “snakes” in the industry undermined Enuff, pointing to figures who appeared alongside him in a video after his exit. Despite the controversy, Flex praised Enuff as a pioneer in New York’s club scene, crediting him with shaping Spanish hip-hop parties and popularizing multi-booked nights across the city. “There would be no Spanish hip-hop parties without DJ Enuff,” Flex said. “He is the originator of it.” Following his departure, Hot 97 has announced that beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2, Flex will shift into a new 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. evening block.
