SZA Responds to Nicki Minaj’s Ongoing Social Media Attacks With Screenshot of Alleged Collaboration Request

SZA has responded to Nicki Minaj’s string of online attacks by sharing a screenshot of an alleged text exchange in which Minaj appears to inquire about a potential collaboration. In the screenshot posted by SZA, someone from her team appears to ask on Minaj’s behalf, “Is sza recording right now? Got this hook I think she would be dope on.” Billboard has reached out to Minaj’s camp for comment but has yet to receive a response.

Minaj’s public criticism of SZA began earlier this week, after she seemingly interpreted a vague tweet from the singer — “Mercury retrograde .. don’t take the bait lol silly goose” — as a subtweet aimed at her. In a series of now-viral posts on X, Minaj called the “Kill Bill” singer “ugly,” a “liar,” and accused her of trying to mimic her appearance and persona. Minaj also resurfaced an old alleged tweet in which SZA called her a “clown,” mocking the singer’s past comments about her freckles and hair. SZA had initially responded with, “I don’t give a f–k bout none of that weird s–t you popping,” but has otherwise remained largely quiet until now.

As fans speculate about the root of the tension, many point to Minaj’s long-running issues with Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrence “Punch” Henderson, who previously managed SZA. The friction comes just as SZA continues her Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar — a trek that recently broke records for highest-grossing co-headline tour in Billboard Boxscore history. The tour heads next to Wales on July 19, following a two-night stint in Paris. Despite the drama, it appears SZA is staying focused on her music, while Minaj shows no signs of backing down.

Released on October 31, 1998, D’Angelo’s “Devil’s Pie” marked a bold new direction for the R&B visionary. Teaming up with Gang Starr’s DJ Premier, the track traded the smooth, urban contemporary polish of Brown Sugar for a raw, experimental sound that previewed the earthy funk and groove-driven vibe of his 2000 masterpiece Voodoo. Originally made for rapper Canibus (who passed on it), the song ultimately found its perfect home with D’Angelo and landed on the soundtrack for the 1998 film Belly. Musically, “Devil’s Pie” is a stripped-down, hip-hop-infused jam built from vintage P-Funk harmonies and a collage of samples from Teddy Pendergrass, Fat Joe, Pierre Henry, and Raekwon. It stands as one of Voodoo’s most sample-heavy cuts, reflecting D’Angelo’s creative chemistry with members of the Soulquarians collective, including J Dilla, whose rhythmic fingerprints subtly shape the song’s percussive swing. The result is a gritty, hypnotic groove that feels both spiritual and streetwise. Lyrically, “Devil’s Pie” cuts deep into the materialism and moral compromises infecting late-’90s hip-hop culture. With biting commentary on greed, ego, and the temptation of “dough, cream, ice, cheddar, and bread,” D’Angelo delivers what Questlove once called a “sermon against the money-hungry, jiggafied state of the world.” Over a haunting beat, he reminds listeners that success without soul is its own kind of prison — making “Devil’s Pie” a timeless warning wrapped in irresistible funk.
