Last month, North Carolina rapper Rapsody delivered her fifth album, the eloquently titled God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, a metaphor for the project’s central themes of spirituality, race, and romantic escapades. Outkast is taking rapper and producer Silas Wilson, who performs as OVRKAST, to federal court in Georgia over a trademark dispute involving the names. The hip-hop duo’s trademark company, High Schoolers LLC, filed a lawsuit accusing Wilson of trademark infringement, unfair competition and breaching an agreement that required him to stop using the OVRKAST name by July 15. According to the complaint, Wilson agreed to adopt OVERKXST as his replacement stage name but later delayed completing the necessary paperwork and proposed two alternatives that had previously been rejected. The lawsuit points to Wilson’s own comments in a July 2025 Rolling Stone interview as evidence that confusion between OVRKAST and Outkast already exists. Wilson acknowledged that people have mistaken his name for Outkast, saying, “They read Ovrkast [as] Outkast” and described repeatedly having to explain that he was not referring to the legendary Atlanta duo. High Schoolers LLC argues that Wilson continued using OVRKAST after receiving a breach notice on Aug. 5 and being given an Aug. 11 deadline to comply. The complaint states that Wilson “continues to use the OVRKAST mark” despite knowing about Outkast’s trademark rights and the alleged settlement agreement. Outkast is asking the court to prohibit Wilson from using OVRKAST or any similar name in connection with music, merchandise, websites, social media accounts and promotional materials. The lawsuit also seeks Wilson’s profits from the disputed name, damages and legal fees. Additionally, High Schoolers LLC wants clothing and marketing materials bearing the OVRKAST mark destroyed.
