Rapsody - God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops

Last month, North Carolina rapper Rapsody delivered her fifth album, the eloquently titled God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, a metaphor for the project’s central themes of spirituality, race, and romantic escapades. From the brash lyrics and unabashed expressions of affection on “Black Love” to the soothing sounds of adoration on “Apple Sauce,” Rapsody explores love and identity with both confidence and vulnerability. Across 15 tracks, the album features guest appearances ranging from Clipse’s Malice to D12 rapper Mr. Porter, who appears on three songs and produced a significant portion of the project, as well as funk pioneer George Clinton. The album also gives Rapsody room to showcase her versatility, blending her lyrical prowess with moments of singing, melody, and emotional nuance.


Sonically diverse, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops moves effortlessly between hard breakbeats, heavy drum patterns, soulful grooves, and jazzy backdrops. On the introspective “Pretty Birds,” Rapsody asks, “Tell me about heaven,” setting the tone for one of the album’s more reflective moments. Other standouts include the groove-driven “Joyful,” where she wonders what happened to dancing, and “Apple Sauce,” which explores vulnerability, melody, and the excitement of a crush while sampling D’Angelo’s “One Mo’ Gin” and drawing on African spiritual themes. “OMG! (Love To Sun Ra)” and “Pretty Bird / Way R U” further demonstrate Rapsody’s ability to journey into both joyous and poignant emotional territory.


Deeply entrenched in truth-telling, healing, odes to Black excellence, and pure, unadulterated hip-hop, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops (which was inspired by Rapsody's travel to Ghana and South Africa and recorded across sessions in Africa and Detroit) finds Rapsody embracing every facet of her artistry. It’s a layered, profound, and accessible album that balances introspection with celebration while demonstrating just how much emotional and sonic territory she can cover.

Former 'Source' EIC Kim Osorio Pleads Guilty to Lying to FBI in Queens Defenders Scandal

Kim Osorio, a media personality and hip-hop journalist connected to the embezzlement scandal involving Queens Defenders founder Lori Zeno, pleaded guilty Thursday to making a false statement to a federal agent. Prosecutors alleged that Osorio helped Zeno’s boyfriend, Rashad Ruhani, conceal a cellphone from the FBI on the day of his arrest. Osorio, 52, was traveling with Ruhani on a flight to Kennedy Airport when she took possession of the phone and helped get rid of it before federal agents could seize it. “I made a materially false statement to a federal agent when I denied taking possession of Rashad Ruhani’s cell phone,” she admitted in Brooklyn federal court. According to court filings, Osorio and Ruhani were in a romantic relationship. Osorio, the first female editor-in-chief of The Source magazine, has had a lengthy career in media and hip-hop journalism. In 2006, she won an $8 million verdict against The Source after a jury found that she had been wrongfully fired after complaining about sexual harassment. A graduate of Fordham University and New York Law School, Osorio later wrote a memoir in 2008 and appeared on VH1’s reality series The Gossip Game in 2013. Federal prosecutors indicted Osorio in October, accusing her of breaking the law by assisting Ruhani. She subsequently sought to suppress statements she made to FBI agents as well as evidence obtained from her home, but a judge rejected the motion on Aug. 27. Her guilty plea Thursday was to a single count of making a false statement. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Osorio faces an estimated sentence of up to one year and four months in prison when she is sentenced Dec. 28. She remains free on a $25,000 bond.

Outkast Sues Rapper Ovrkast Over Trademark Dispute

Outkast is taking rapper and producer Silas Wilson, who performs as OVRKAST, to federal court in Georgia over a trademark dispute involving the names. The hip-hop duo’s trademark company, High Schoolers LLC, filed a lawsuit accusing Wilson of trademark infringement, unfair competition and breaching an agreement that required him to stop using the OVRKAST name by July 15. According to the complaint, Wilson agreed to adopt OVERKXST as his replacement stage name but later delayed completing the necessary paperwork and proposed two alternatives that had previously been rejected. The lawsuit points to Wilson’s own comments in a July 2025 Rolling Stone interview as evidence that confusion between OVRKAST and Outkast already exists. Wilson acknowledged that people have mistaken his name for Outkast, saying, “They read Ovrkast [as] Outkast” and described repeatedly having to explain that he was not referring to the legendary Atlanta duo. High Schoolers LLC argues that Wilson continued using OVRKAST after receiving a breach notice on Aug. 5 and being given an Aug. 11 deadline to comply. The complaint states that Wilson “continues to use the OVRKAST mark” despite knowing about Outkast’s trademark rights and the alleged settlement agreement. Outkast is asking the court to prohibit Wilson from using OVRKAST or any similar name in connection with music, merchandise, websites, social media accounts and promotional materials. The lawsuit also seeks Wilson’s profits from the disputed name, damages and legal fees. Additionally, High Schoolers LLC wants clothing and marketing materials bearing the OVRKAST mark destroyed.
