Jennifer Hudson has announced that she will serve as a producer on a new Broadway revival of Dreamgirls. The Oscar-winning performer confirmed the news during an episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, revealing that the iconic musical will return to Broadway this fall for the first time since its original debut more than four decades ago.
“This fall, Dreamgirls is coming back to Broadway for the very first time since its opening 45 years ago in 1981,” Hudson shared with excitement. “Now, it’s being reimagined for a whole new generation, which I am so excited about.” She went on to reveal her new role behind the scenes, adding that she has been enjoying working with the creative team and looks forward to sharing more details about the production as it develops.
The revival will be directed and choreographed by five-time Tony nominee Camille A. Brown, known for her work on Broadway productions including Hell’s Kitchen and Gypsy. Brown’s involvement signals a fresh creative vision for the beloved musical, which is being reimagined for a contemporary audience while honoring its historic legacy on stage.
Originally opening on December 20, 1981, at the Imperial Theatre, Dreamgirls was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett and quickly became a landmark in musical theater. The original cast featured Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, Ben Harney, Cleavant Derricks, and Obba Babatundé. The production earned 13 Tony nominations and six wins. Hudson later portrayed Effie White in the 2006 film adaptation, delivering a powerful performance that won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and cemented the character’s legacy for a new generation.
