Patti LaBelle - Somebody Loves You Baby (You Know Who It Is)
This week’s Throwback Thursday spotlights one of Patti LaBelle’s most beloved classics: “Somebody Loves You Baby (You Know Who It Is)”. Released in 1991 as the second single from her gold-certified album Burnin’, the song was written and produced by Bunny Sigler and Eugene “Lambchops” Curry—both close collaborators in shaping LaBelle’s soulful sound. With LaBelle serving as executive producer and delivering one of her signature powerhouse vocal performances, the track soared to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart in early 1992. Its music video, like the one for her previous single “Feels Like Another,” was filmed on the legendary stage of the Apollo Theater, adding to its classic New York energy.
“Somebody Loves You Baby” quickly cemented itself as a staple in LaBelle’s catalog, celebrated for its slow-burning groove, emotional depth, and repeat-worthy refrain. The song’s influence has extended well beyond its original release era. Over the years, its rich melodies and unmistakable hook have made it a favorite for sampling and reinterpretation. Rapper Plies tapped into its magic for his track “Somebody (Loves You)” on his 2008 album Definition of Real, reintroducing the song’s warmth to a new generation of listeners.
The legacy didn’t stop there. The song later appeared in the sitcom
Happily Divorced, and rapper Trina sampled it for her 2019 track “If It Ain’t Me” featuring K. Michelle. More than 30 years after its release, “Somebody Loves You Baby” remains a shining example of Patti LaBelle’s ability to blend emotion, elegance, and undeniable soul—proving once again why she stands as one of R&B’s most enduring icons.
