Tems Fires Back at Body Shamers: “It’s Mine”

Grammy-winning Afrobeats artist Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, is pushing back against online body-shaming. During her performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, a wave of social media commentary focused not on her vocals but on her appearance. One post in particular, claiming Tems had “big laps, not an actual ass,” drew a sharp and unapologetic response from the 29-year-old singer. “It’s small, it’s flat, it’s fat. Dog, it’s mine,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter), expressing frustration with the scrutiny and reclaiming her body on her own terms.
In a series of candid replies, Tems made it clear that she has no tolerance for unsolicited comments about her physique. “Show us your bum bum,” one demand read. Tems clapped back: “See? No, show me yours first. See how that feels?” She emphasized that bodies change and fluctuate naturally. “It’s just a body. I will add and lose weight,” she stated. While fans and critics alike have long speculated about her figure, Tems reminded them that she never tried to hide it—she simply refused to cater to opinions. “The more you don’t like my body, the better for me,” she added. “But it’s enough now. Move on from my bum.”
In a recent interview with Cocoa Butter in Atlanta, Tems spoke about embracing her identity as a Black woman. “I love being curvy. I love that I have a little booty,” she said. Known for her bold fashion sense, she added, “I’m into the bling. Nigerians are extravagant, and I always put my own spin on it.”
