‘Star Search’ Returns: Netflix Revives Iconic Talent Show With Host Anthony Anderson

Netflix is bringing back Star Search, the legendary talent competition that helped launch stars like Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Dave Chappelle. The revived series, hosted by Anthony Anderson, will debut Jan. 13 and stream live on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The format will mirror the original’s wide-ranging talent categories, from comedians and musicians to dancers and kids’ acts, with all performances, voting, and eliminations happening in real time.
Anderson says the live voting element will transform the viewing experience, giving audiences worldwide the chance to weigh in instantly. “Knowing that fans from all over the world can cast their votes in real time adds a whole new layer of excitement,” he told Netflix’s Tudum, noting that the interactive format makes viewers feel like judges themselves.
Originally hosted by Ed McMahon from 1983 to 1995, Star Search became a launching pad for generations of entertainers, including actors Billy Porter and Brad Garrett. The show was previously revived in 2003, hosted by Arsenio Hall, during the height of American Idol. Netflix’s new iteration marks the first live, global version of the franchise, aiming to introduce the classic competition to a new era of rising talent.
