Chris Brown Receives Suspended Eight-Month Sentence in London Nightclub Assault Case

Grammy Award-winning singer Chris Brown has received a suspended eight-month sentence in the United Kingdom, avoiding jail time in connection with a 2023 assault at a London nightclub. In July, Brown pleaded guilty to one count of affray at Southwark Crown Court for striking music producer Abraham Diaw over the head with a tequila bottle. Before sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner acknowledged Brown’s successful music career but emphasized that his fame and commercial standing did not entitle him to special treatment under the law.
The incident occurred in February 2023 at Tape London nightclub, where prosecutors said Brown struck Diaw twice with a tequila bottle while his co-defendant, Florida rapper Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby, punched the victim. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the assault continued as Diaw attempted to escape through the club, and he was kicked while defenseless on the floor. Diaw subsequently received hospital treatment for injuries to his head and knees. Akinlolu, described by prosecutors as Brown’s vocal coach, pleaded guilty and received a four-month suspended sentence.
Arrest warrants were issued after the men left the United Kingdom, and Brown was arrested in May 2025 upon returning to the country for a world tour performance in Manchester. Senior prosecutor Claire Campbell described the incident as a “vicious and unprovoked attack” in a crowded nightclub. Both men had initially denied charges involving assault and grievous bodily harm, while Brown also faced an offensive weapon charge. Those additional charges were subsequently dropped following the guilty pleas.
