Music Review: Ari Lennox - Vacancy

Ari Lennox’s Vacancy, her third studio album, arrives four years after 2022’s Age/Sex/Location and finds the D.C. singer leaning confidently into her devotion to traditional R&B. Across 15 tracks, Lennox pairs lush harmonies, horns, and stripped-back instrumentation with her unmistakable, drawn-out vocals and slow-jam sensibility. Laced with humor teased through social media skits, songs like “Mobbin in DC” and the flirtatious “Pretzel” balance playfulness with vocal precision, while “Under the Moon” showcases her fearless theatrical streak.
The album also explores a range of relationship themes, touching on cheating, being taken for granted, trust, and the push and pull of monogamy. Experimentation comes through on reggae-tinged “Cool Down” and the buoyant “Company” with Buju Banton (the only guest appearance on the album). While Vacancy preserves Lennox’s beloved sound and introduces fresh textures, its one notable flaw is a lack of deeper emotional and lyrical weight, leaving some themes feeling more breezy than fully realized.
